This is very helpful information because I have a very mature 8 yr old, yes I would have to agree maturity play's a huge part. We have a blended family and my now 8 yr old is more responsible/mature than my 15 & 20 yr olds. Sad to say I trust my daughter to stay alone then having her older brother or sister to stay alone. I did read a great article about guidelines If the child can call 911 and give their name, address and phone number, knows what to do if a problem arises, use a microwave or make a simple snack, know not to open the door to strangers and like you mentioned above only answer numbers posted. I would suggest making a list of names & numbers so that the child can call, I even have that now just encase I hurt myself my youngest can call for help for me.

Great post. All common sense stuff. I leave my daughter alone for up to 20 minutes and she's almost 8. We have covered all the bases of what to do and what not to do while i'm away from the house. She is mature for her age and I trust her. Plus we also have walkie talkies to keep in touch in the event that she needs me home quickly or has a question about something.

Thank you. As stated in the actual blog article, there is no law in Canada about it.
Always nice to hear that lawyers have same opinion.

You should make sure of what u r talking about before you post. There is no law in Canada regarding this. I work in a lawyers office and asked about this. It is up to the parent to make a reasonable judgement not the government.
